People Before Profits

Tuesday, February 18
7:30-9:00 PM EST via Zoom

Closed Captions will be provided.

Dear Nada,

Our February forum: Pandemic Preparedness, Public Health & Putting People Before Profits will explore lessons learned from current and past pandemics, the dangers posed by corporate greed, deregulation, dismantling and silencing of oversight agencies, and the unchecked environmental destruction that is leading to the increased risk of animal to human disease transmission, and further destabilization of our increasingly precarious public health infrastructure.Button linking to RSVP formWe will hear about the ongoing dismantling, disinvestment from and replacement of structures, policies and funding of the US public health system, and how we can better prepare for future health crises while ensuring that people—not corporate profits—are the priority.

Featured Speakers:

  • Gregg Gonsalves, PhD Associate Professor of Epidemiology at Yale School of Public Health, has worked on HIV/AIDS and other global health issues with several organizations, including the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP), the Treatment Action Group (TAG), Gay Men’s Health Crisis, and the AIDS and Rights Alliance for Southern Africa.
  • Rob Wallace, PhD evolutionary epidemiologist, co-founder of the Agroecology and Rural Economics Research Corps, Pandemic Research for the People, and the People’s CDC. Wallace is author of essay collections Big Farms Make Big Flu, Dead Epidemiologists, and The Fault in Our SARS. He is also co-author of the more technical monographs Neoliberal Ebola and Clear-Cutting Disease Control. He has consulted for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the CDC, and community groups around the world.

We will discuss how the commodification of COVID-19 testing, vaccination, and treatment, and other communicable diseases, results in countless preventable illnesses and deaths, particularly in underfunded communities of color, with no accountability for the insurance and pharmaceutical corporations raking in record profits.Button linking to RSVP formJoin us this Tuesday, February 18th at 7:30pm to envision how a publicly funded healthcare system, that eliminates all out-of-pocket costs and surprise bills, and that fully covers everyone — regardless of employment, immigration status, ability to pay, age or any other status — would fortify our resilience against threats to public health, and would improve health outcomes and our overall well-being.

And we invite you to join us in Albany on March 18th for our annual Lobby Day to #PassNYHealth for Health Workers, Residents, Students & Advocates!

Thanks for all you do and keep acting for life-saving change,
