The New York State Senate took a bold step late last night to ensure that risky new gas drilling techniques will not move forward until the state has properly evaluated environmental and public health threats.

In light of many incidents of drinking water contamination, dead livestock, and catastrophic explosions, Senators in both parties voted to instate an 11-month moratorium on the controversial practice of drilling known as hydraulic fracturing or fracking. The moratorium (S8129B/Thompson) passed by a strong majority in a vote of 48 to 9, with overwhelming bipartisan support. Senate Minority Leader Dean Skelos led eighteen other Republicans in voting for the legislation.
