As you all know, the Trump administration finalized the public charge rule which attempts to deliberately limit legal immigration for working class immigrants. The
final public charge rule was officially published on Wednesday, August 14, 2019, and could go into effect on October 15, 2019 (though several pending lawsuits may delay implementation of the rule).
News of public charge is causing fear and confusion in neighborhoods across the county. Our best defense is to provide our communities with education and dispel any misinformation that may be present. For this reason we will be hosting a Westchester Town Hall on Public Charge next Thursday, September 5th from 3-5pm at the Greenburgh Library located at 300 Tarrytown Rd, Elmsford. This event is geared towards community-based organizations that service and/or advocate for our immigrant community members and will provide you with the tools to better guide them, as well as allies, on this issue. We will have a panel of experts available to answer any questions you may have, including:
-
- Commissioner Kevin McGuire, Westchester County Dept. of Social Services
- Jessica Greenberg, Esq., Catholic Charities Community Services
- Karin Anderson, Esq., Neighbors Link
- James Shuford, HRHCare Community Health
If you or a representative from your organization can make it please RSVP
here. The pdf flyer is attached below. Please feel free to forward this information to your networks and let me know if there are any questions.
Thank you for your partnership and your continued efforts in defending our communities!
In solidarity,
Vanessa Agudelo
