FORUM ON EDUCATIONAL INEQUALITY

Join Westchester for Change at our upcoming forum with featured speaker New York State Regent, Judith Johnson

Date: October 20, 2015
Time: 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Place: The Ethical Culture Society of White Plains, 7 Saxon Woods Road, White Plains

The greatest education reforms in our country have been born when society is galvanized by questions of moral importance. American public schools were once the vehicle that provided access to the concept of economic mobility. Public schools were viewed as the great equalizer. The notion was that each student, regardless of birth conditions, would receive an education that led to opportunities to climb the American economic ladder of success. Today, that access is closed for far too many children.

Now we ask, what is the role of public education in a democratic society? How can we ensure equitable education for all? Challenging decades of inequality is hard but essential work if we are to preserve our democratic principles of social justice.

Westchester for Change is delighted and fortunate to have Regent Judith Johnson of the New York Board of Regents as its featured speaker for its next forum, which is on educational inequality. Ms. Johnson, a former Deputy Assistant Secretary and Acting Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education in the Department of Education in the Clinton administration, is also a former superintendent of both the Peekskill and Mount Vernon public schools.

Regent Johnson will discuss the characteristics that define public school education inequities, the implications for our democracy if left unaddressed, and invite us to consider strategies to fulfill the state’s mission of providing a public school education that offers opportunities for all students to emerge from school prepared to participate as members of a democratic society.

A question and answer period will follow the presentation.

Cosponsoring groups include: Citizen Action of New York, Concerned Families of Westchester, Ethical Society of Westchester, Greenburgh Democrats, Greenburgh NAACP, Mt. Vernon United Tenants, Scarsdale Democratic Town Committee, White Plains Democratic City Committee, White Plains NAACP, WESPAC (list in formation).

Demand an Independent Risk Assessment of the Proximate Danger of Spectra AIM Pipeline Adjacent to Indian Point Nuclear Plant

PLEASE call Senator Schumer, Senator Gillibrand, Congresswoman Lowey, Congressman Engel, Congressman Maloney and Governor Cuomo to tell them that they MUST publicly advocate for a thorough, transparent, independent risk assessment of the Spectra AIM gas pipeline, running alarmingly close to Indian Point.

The risk of a catastrophic incident at Indian Point has been greatly underestimated by Entergy and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. FERC’s approval of the AIM project was based on a handwritten, unsigned calculation that doesn’t comply with NRC regulations.

A petition with over 27,000 signatures will be delivered to Governor Cuomo in Albany next Tuesday, October 13. A press conference will be held at 11:00 a.m.and will feature Assemblywoman Sandy Galef and nuclear expert Paul Blanch.
