The Fight for $15

April 15, 2015 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Big companies like McDonalds make billions in profits, while the people who work hard for them can barely support themselves or their families. Simply, the minimum wage is still too low to provide the basics. But on Wednesday, April 15, we can join the growing movement to fight for $15 an hour!

What started as a small protest in New York by fast food workers two years ago, has grown into a global solidarity campaign fighting for increased minimum wage. Now these workers are asking for our community’s help — the greater the numbers, the louder the call for labor rights will be heard. Let’s join them!

On Wednesday, April 15, thousands of people will be demonstrating in cities across the US, and there’s an event happening near you. Click below to find out where it is, and RSVP. Heads up that you’ll be taken to the Fight for $15 campaign website, not the Avaaz site:

Income inequality in this country is now worse than anytime in the last 87 years. But since this fight began, dozens of cities and states across the country have raised the minimum wage. In fact, more than 9 million workers can buy more food and housing for their families! But we can’t stop yet. If we come together, we can ensure companies fairly compensate their employees and no American is living in poverty.

Some people worry that raising the minimum wage might drive up unemployment. But the research is not conclusive — many economists have found little or no evidence that a higher minimum wage increases unemployment. And it’s clear that a higher minimum wage will help millions of workers.

The Avaaz community has always supported the most vulnerable workers.  If you believe that every mother who works hard for a living should make enough money to feed her kids — if you believe that a man who works for a company for 5 years every day in a hot kitchen and still makes $8.25 an hour, deserves a raise — then join us in the streets next Wednesday, April 15.
