Here is the latest news about our commemoration of the ongoing crises at Fukushima.
On March 9 we once again pause to mark the anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that shook Japan, killed and displaced thousands and released to the atmosphere and oceans of the world catastrophic amounts of radiation from the stricken reactors. That radiation is even now being monitored in Canada and on the West coast of our country. The day is divided into three parts.
10:45 AM: If you want to walk with Jun San and the Peace Walkers meet at the Metro North train station at 10:45 AM on Sunday March 9th. We will assemble in the upper parking lot.The Walkers will stop for lunch at the Croton Unitarian Universal Church and then proceed to Indian Point where they will pause briefly at the intersection of Bleakly and Broadway. They will arrive at Peekskill Riverfront Green at approximately 3:00 PM.
(We still need a support vehicle to accompany the walkers in case someone gets to tired to walk all the way. If you can perform this service call Marilyn at 914-954-6739.)
2:45 PM: Come to the Blessing of the Hudson and the Waters of the World at Peekskill Riverfront Green. (Drop off your potluck dish at the church before you go down to the River.) The program will begin when the Peace Walkers arrive. This will be an interfaith ceremony where we as a community can come together and stand in solidarity with the people of Japan as they struggle to live with this ongoing tragedy. We stand united knowing that a catastrophic release of radiation from Indian Point could devastate our families, homes and lives as it has in Japan and that the reactors there must be shut down.
4:00 PM Come to the Peekskill Presbyterian Church, 705 South Street not far from the Riverfront Green. (We need two people to be at the church early to set up and receive potluck dishes before the Riverfront Green program. If you can do this contact duna1@earthlink.net.) Share a potluck with the Peace Walkers neighbors, clergy and special Native American guests Maria Maybee and Chief Dwaine Perry. We will also have Jean Fallon, recently returned from Fukushima. Join us for a short after dinner program of reflections, music and information knowing that as a community we can learn from what has happened at Fukushima and work to make the Hudson River Valley and the 50 mile radius surrounding Indian Point safer for ourselves and generations to come.
If you have questions call the IPSEC number at 888-474-8848 and someone will get back to you right away.
I hope to see you on Sunday, March 9th.
Sincerely,
Marilyn Elie
