Schumer Rally to oppose Spectra Pipeline

May 23, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

MAY 2016 – We The People Can Stop the Spectra AIM Pipeline!

Dear Nada,

My name is Debby Bobson and I am a volunteer with SAPE.  As you probably know, the Spectra AIM pipeline is a high-pressure, 42-inch diameter methane gas pipeline that would run within 105 feet of critical infrastructure at the Indian Point nuclear plant. The pipeline is under construction and is scheduled to be completed this November. Despite calls to stop the Spectra AIM pipeline, including a petition signed by over 30,000 citizens and letters and statements by elected officials at all levels of government, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has refused to rescind its Certificate for the project. This is an urgent and time-sensitive situation and construction of the Spectra AIM pipeline must be stopped immediately!

Two major events are coming up in May and we need your help to get a huge turnout and to raise the voice of We The People! ResistAIM is sponsoring a Direct Action on Saturday, May 21st in Westchesterand on Monday, May 23rd in NYC, ResistAIM, SAPE, Community Climate Initiative and other groups are sponsoring a large rally outside Senator Chuck Schumer’s office on Third Avenue near Grand Central Terminal at noon

We are asking your group to sign on to cosponsor these events. If so, we will ask you please actively promote the events by sharing the information with your groups via email, Facebook and Twitter and by posting on your website.

  • Direct Action Event

On May 21stResistAIM will be sponsoring an event where people from all over New York and the Northeast will come to the pipeline route for a day of peaceful civil disobedience. We will rally at the site where Spectra Energy is constructing the AIM pipeline in order to stop construction from proceeding, sending a powerful message that we will not let this company destroy our communities. While we support those who are in a position to risk arrest, there are many ways for people to be a part of the action in a non-arrestable way, and we encourage people to attend in any way that they can. Those who have not signed the Pledge to Resist, are encouraged to please sign here: http://tinyurl.com/ResistAIM. You will be contacted by a member of ResistAIM with an invitation to an orientation session. If you cannot attend an orientation prior to May 21, you are still welcome.

This day will begin at 9:00AM and there will be an hour-long overview and “know-your-rights” session until about 10AM (folks who are interested in getting more in-depth civil disobedience training are encouraged to attend the Break Free action camp happening the previous week, May 11-13 – see THIS LINK to register).

HERE is a link to the May 21st action Facebook page. You can check here as any new information becomes available. Please let us know if you can put the word out to your members, and ResistAIM coordinators are happy to speak further if you have any questions about that day.

  • Schumer Rally – We need many people to turn out in NYC!

On May 23rda large rally is planned for 12 NOON outside the office of New York Senator Charles Schumer (780 Third Avenue, at 48th St, New York, NY 10017). SAPE, SEnRG, ResistAIM, Community Climate Initiative, Concerned Families of Westchester and other groups have already signed on to sponsor this event. Will you join us?

We know that Schumer has real power in the Senate, and we are calling on him to stand with New Yorkers to protect us from this dangerous pipeline. We will rally at his office at noon and tell him to publicly insist that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) halt construction immediately. We will also ask him to reach out to other Senators and Congress members and to President Obama to join him in this urgent effort.

HERE is a link to the May 23rd rally Facebook page. We are hoping to see as many people in the street for this as possible, so any reposting or outreach you can do to your members for this rally is very much appreciated as well.

Thank you so much!  Again, feel free to call or email if you have any questions.
