Prison Writing Symposium with Joy James and Rehabilitation through the Arts
Our Prison Writing Symposium features a 6:00pm film screening and a 7:30pm keynote talk/reading 6:00pm: Our Prison Writing Symposium begins at 6pm with a screening of the documentary film Amazing Grace, an inside look at an incredible arts program at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, New York’s only maximum security prison for women. Stereotypes of women behind bars are examined through the scenes of rehearsal, performance, and as the women talk about their work on the project. Katherine Vockins (Rehabilitation Through the Arts’ founder and executive director) and Anne Lloyd (director of the Amazing Grace musical performance depicted in the film) will be on hand for a Q&A following the screening.
7:30pm: After a brief reception/intermission, our Prison Writing Symposium will continue with scholar Joy James. James is one of the nation’s leading writers on the prison industrial complex.
