Nuclear Regulatory Commission annual meeting

June 8, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Dear Friends,

This Wednesday, June 8th, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will hold its annual meeting at the Doubletree Inn 455 South Broadway in Tarrytown from 7:00-9:00 p.m.

Each year the NRC has a public meeting and people may sign up to speak for about 3 minutes. SAPE has been sharing information for over two years about the NRC’s failure to conduct a valid risk assessment of the siting of the Spectra AIM’s new 42″ diameter high pressure gas pipeline that crosses Entergy properly for 2,159 feet and is sited 105 feet from critical infrastructure at Indian Point.

In addition to the multitude of safety problems at the aging, unlicensed nuclear plant and the danger from the two existing gas pipelines, the new Spectra pipeline endangers the lives of 20 million people in the 50 mile radius of Indian Point.

The NRC continues to say that they did an assessment, but NRC staff acknowledged that they do not have pipeline expertise. An independent pipeline expert has stated multiple times that the NRC underestimated the potential impact radius of a rupture of the Spectra AIM pipeline and that the valve closure time cannot possibly be accomplished in three minutes. The valves are remotely operated from Houston. Should the pipeline rupture at this location, there is potential for a core meltdown resulting in a catastrophic nuclear release like Fukushima.

We know that the Japanese corporation, TEPCO, and the Japanese government withheld information about the accident in Fukushima and we do not have confidence in Entergy or the NRC to protect us or to properly evaluate risk from a pipeline rupture.

Please support SAPE and our allies at the meeting on Thursday by asking the NRC to tell FERC it must rescind its Certificate due to the faulty analysis and halt construction of the pipeline immediately. This dangerous pipeline will be operating in November if it is not halted NOW.

For more information about the NRC’s analysis of the pipeline’s siting at Indian Point, please go to www.sape2016.org.

Thank you!
