A Chance to Win –
Meet Author Jonathan Schuppe at Yonkers Riverfront Library
As a young man coming of age in Newark, New Jersey, Rodney Mason cared about two things: dealing drugs and playing baseball. A drive-by shooting left the former pitching ace paralyzed at age 27, destroying any remaining big league dreams. Years later, Rodney vowed to save Newark’s kids from the street life that took away his youth and his mobility. He decided to form a Little League team in the notoriously rough South Ward. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jonathan Schuppe chronicles this incredible true story in A Chance to Win: Boyhood, Baseball, and the Struggle for Redemption in the Inner City. Yonkers Riverfront Library invites you to meet the author on Sunday, October 27th at 2:00 pm in the Yonkers Room (4th floor).
A Chance to Win is the heartfelt account of one community’s painful losses and unlikely victories—both on and off the field. Written with Schuppe’s careful journalistic eye, the book is a vivid portrait of a struggling city and its forgotten people; of boyhood and fatherhood, sin and forgiveness, failure and ambition. It’s a story of unexpected friendships, harsh realities and ultimately, of hope. Author Alex Kotlowitz has called A Chance to Win “one terrific read, an extraordinary journey with a cast of characters who will stay with you. I found myself on the edge of my seat rooting for Rodney Mason and his young protégés, and ruminating on what it really means to find redemption.”
This FREE event is open to the public. Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing by the author. Light refreshments will be provided.
Yonkers Riverfront Library is located at One Larkin Center in Yonkers, New York, across from the Yonkers train station on the Metro-North Hudson line. Parking is available at the nearby Buena Vista and Warburton parking garages. The library is handicapped accessible.
