The 8th Annual John Howard Lecture of Law and Society
Collateral Damage: Families of the Incarcerated

John Howard, Ph.D., J.D.
Professor Emeritus of Sociology

“When a parent goes to prison—it is never alone–the children go with them.” This observation by the Children’s Justice Alliance is particularly true in New York where 180,000 minors, about half in New York City, have a parent who is or has been incarcerated. The 8th annual John Howard Lecture on Law and Justice will feature a documentary film made by a Purchase College Film School graduate, Collateral Damage: Families of the Incarcerated, looking at Hour Children, an organization in New York City that works with women recently released from prison and their children, seeking to provide a program that enhances their chances of survival as functioning families. The film will be followed by a panel discussion. Panelists include Sister Teresa Fitzgerald, Executive Director of Hour Children and Dominique Clifford, recently reunited with her daughter after a term of imprisonment.

This presentation was made possible through a generous grant from Dr. Robert Timberger.

Admission is free.
Free and open to the public.
