Expand Evacuation, Emergency Plans Around Indian Point, Study Urges

May 3, 2015 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

20 million people live within 50 miles of the nuclear plants but only 1.7
million have a plan, DisasterAccountability Project points out.

On Sunday, May 3 from 1 – 4 p.m. Clearwater will host a FORUM ON NUCLEAR
WASTE STORAGE AND DECOMMISSIONING at Stony Point Conference Center featuring
Kevin Kamps of Beyond Nuclear, Gary Shaw of the Indian Point Safe Energy
Coalition (IPSEC), Tim Judson of the Nuclear Information and Resource
Service (NIRS), Deb Katz of Citizens Awareness Network (CAN), Jessica Azulay
of Alliance for Green Energy (AGREE), and Deborah Brancato of Riverkeeper.
We will present information about Indian Point’s severely overcrowded fuel
pools, the need for a plan to decommission the facility when it closes —
and the lack of sufficient decommissioning funds to ensure it is done
safely. There will also be an update on Indian Point legal matters and the
status of other NY State nuclear facilities.

On a brighter note, on Wednesday, May 20 from 1 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Clearwater
and our partners will present a GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE & GREEN JOBS FORUM.
Many existing workforce development and employment programs are expanding to
incorporate installation and maintenance of green infrastructure practices,
particularly in Cities that are ramping up deployment of green
infrastructure practices. The Center for Watershed Protection webcast will
feature several programs around the country, highlighting best practices for
these types of programs, as well as critical lessons learned from 1 – 2:30
p.m.; followed by a panel of local experts, including Jason Morris, Newburgh
City Engineer, Robert Wright and staff and students from Nubian Directions
and environmental consultant, Simon Gruber. The event, held at Kaplan Hall,
SUNY/Orange, Newburgh campus, will be of special interest to planners,
engineers, landscape architects, contractors and public works staff, as well
as people seeking employment in this field.
