The Corporate
Takeover of Medicine
vs The Law

Tuesday, May 20, 2025
7:30-9:00 PM EST via Zoom

All are welcome. Closed Captions will be provided.

Dear Nada,

Join us on Tuesday, May 20th at 7:30pm on Zoom for our May Virtual Forum: The Corporate Takeover of Medicine vs The Law.

The AMA was against the corporatization of medical practices in the nineteenth century, so states passed Clinical Practice of Medicine (CPOM) Laws that prohibited unlicensed lay corporations from owning, employing, or controlling medical practices.  Yet these doctrines have proven ineffective at stopping the corporatization of physician practices in its current form.

There is increasing concern over corporatization and consolidation eroding physician autonomy, clinical independence, morale, and professionalism, and its adverse effect on patient care. States are looking at ways to strengthen this old legal tool to protect physicians and the physician-patient relationship. Professor Erin Fuse Brown will discuss these doctrines and how states must strengthen them to address contemporary forms of corporate control.

The American Academy of Emergency Medicine Physician Group (AAEM PG) actually sued Envision, a private equity company that had taken over emergency rooms in California, seriously affecting patient care and physician autonomy; their case was rooted in the state CPOM Law.

Dr. Mark Reitman will discuss “AAEM PG versus Envision CPOM Litigation”, a case that demonstrates how instituting the CPOM doctrine can be an important tool to prevent the corporatization of medicine, maintain physician autonomy and improve patient care.
