New York youth and youth around the world are striking on Friday, September 20th to demand radical improvement in the way our world’s governments are confronting the climate crisis. WESPAC will be joining them.
To accomplish this, a youth climate strike coalition has come together to collaborate on the campaign. The youth strike coalition, coordinated by Future Coalition, includes national youth-led groups such as Zero Hour, Earth Uprising, Fridays For Future USA, Sunrise, US Youth Climate Strike, and Extinction Rebellion Youth.
The climate crisis is the largest threat of our time, and we’re counting on our collective power to demand immediate and decisive action. This is our opportunity to move beyond the traditional climate bubble and expand the table of who is involved in this movement. It is time to lift up the voices and stories of young people on the frontlines of this crisis and ensure we are creating an intergenerational and intersectional climate justice movement. September 20th is also the second anniversary of Hurricane Maria’s devastating hit on Puerto Rico. We will remember the lives lost and the work that still must be done to rebuild many communities on the island. At the same time, we will reinforce awareness of the thousands of front-line communities here in NYC, throughout the country and around the world that bear the impacts of the climate crisis. These communities are also at the forefront of developing solutions grounded in the principles of an economically and racially just transition.
As Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old founder of the Fridays for Future movement said, everyone is welcome and everyone is needed. We need everyone who is able to march alongside us –across generations, race, gender, religion. –
