Celebrating Father’s Day at Croton Point Park

June 19, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm

COME CELEBRATE FATHER’S DAY WITH US!

What:   Pete’s Pot Luck Picnic to celebrate Father’s Day

When:  Sunday, June 19, 2016, 12 Noon – 6PM, Rain or Shine!!!  (ALSO on Saturday, June 18, 12 – 6, if you prefer – or both!)

Where: Croton Point Park, Croton on Hudson New York, Kichawanc Lodge,

              AKA “The REC HALL”

Who:     IPSEC – the Indian Point Safe Energy Coalition and Friends – all are welcome!

Why:     There will be no Clearwater Hudson River Revival Festival this year.  That is because the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater is in dire need of Coast Guard warranted repairs.  This is very costly and so there is no money to hold the Festival.  We are accustomed to all being together each year for the festival, but often that means we do not see our families for Father’s Day.  We at IPSEC are having this potluck picnic in honor of Pete and Toshi Seeger, who made it all possible.  In lieu of any conceivable Father’s Day gifts, we ask that you make a donation to help “Float the Boat”(Checks can be made out to the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, and are tax deductible, but any amount is helpful, no donation is too small), and bring a dish to share with the many others.  If you are so inclined, and we hope you are, please bring your musical instruments and Frisbees and Spaldings/Tennis balls to add to the fun!

How:  By car or train… see below

This is an invitation to join those of us in the Indian Point Safe Energy Coalition for a potluck picnic at Croton Point Park for an afternoon of food, music, conversation and fun on Father’s Day Sunday, June 19th from noon to 6 PM. Bring the family, young and old.  All are welcome. There is a playground adjacent to the lodge.

For those who are interested, Jeanne Shaw will open up the Riverdrifters Fine Art Works Gallery to small groups of up to 8 at a time – fewer if it is really hot!  The Gallery is a small cabin across the field from the lodge.  If you are lucky you may also meet artist, Barbara Hunt.

Some of you may know about Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival (Founded by the late Pete and Toshi Seeger – Pete was the Founder of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater Organization) that has been held at Croton Point Park for many years.  It is a major venue for outreach for many Music lovers, Artisans, Peace and Justice Activists, and Environmental groups. It is a very special event and attracts thousands.  Unfortunately, it had to be cancelled this year because of very expensive and historic repairs to the Sloop Clearwater.  Some of us who have been attending Revival for decades decided to get together anyway for a Father’s Day Potluck Picnic in honor of Pete and Toshi.

We have rented Kichawanc Lodge (AKA the Rec Hall) in the park and are planning an informal get together with food, music, games, and lots of interesting conversation. The park is beautiful and spending an afternoon by the Hudson River with good food, music, and smart, engaged people is spectacular.  It is an opportunity to get to know others who are actively engaged in working to make the world a better place in many different ways. It can be hard to find time away from activism to relax and recharge, so leave the issues behind and come on up and enjoy an afternoon on the River. Time spent getting to know each other a little better will be time well spent.

When arriving at Croton Point Park by car, tell the attendant you are here for Pete’s Potluck Picnic and they will tell you how to get there.  If you have been to the “Rec Hall” or to Riverdrifter’s Gallery before you will know where to go, just past the RV area.
To get there – After passing through the main gate, where you will tell them you are headed to Pete’s Potluck Picnic at the Rec Hall, continue to the first chance to make a left turn to go up hill. If there is another attendant tell them you are going to the Picnic at the Rec Hall.  Official name is “Pete’s Potluck Picnic”.  They will send you around the traffic triangle and up the hill.  The Landfill will be on your left the entire time.  Go as far as you can until you see the sign that says do not enter.  On your RIGHT will be a gate that should be open.  Go through that gate and drive VERY slowly.  5mph is the limit.  You will see many RV’s parked for campers on your right.  Eventually you will pass the bath house/rest rooms on your left and a couple more RV’s.  When you get past all that, the Rec Hall is on your right.  Take the dirt road bearing right off the main road and you will easily see where to park and where to go.  You will have reached your destination.

If you are coming up by train from the city

The train ride from Grand Central to Croton on Hudson offers some lovely views of the River and takes about an hour.

There is an Express (the Hudson River Line) that leaves Grand Central at 11:43 am and arrives in Croton-Harmon at 12:35.

If traveling by train from the North let us know, too!

We would be happy to arrange to pick you up at the station.  Just call (in advance – this cannot be answered and arranged the day of) the Indian Point Safe Energy Coalition phone line at 888-474-8848 to reserve a seat. Leave your name and phone number and how many in your party and you will get a prompt call back.  We can help facilitate carpools from Manhattan or elsewhere if folks share their willingness to offer a ride or need of one.
