Black Lives Matter – New Rochelle

August 7, 2016 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

New Rochelle students are organizing a Black Lives Matter March on Sunday, August 7th at 5pm. We hope to do the diversity of our community justice by calling attention to problems which disproportionately affect people of color, specifically the problem of police brutality against black civilians. Throughout the process of organizing this event we have been supported immensely by local activists, humanitarian organizations, the police department, and the city of New Rochelle itself, and for this we are extremely thankful.

The march will commence in front of the Huguenot Children’s Library and proceed down North Avenue for a distance of 1.4 miles, concluding in an Open Mic at the Ruby Dee Park next to the New Rochelle Public Library. This march will serve as a visible, unyielding display of solidarity with black Americans who have been targeted and brutalized by police. However, it is above all a peaceful protest, and under no circumstances do we plan on antagonizing the police officers who have helped us achieve the mission of conducting the march.

While the march itself will be the active force to call attention to inequality and demand that the city take our concerns seriously, the open mic at the conclusion will be a chance to begin honest dialogue with police. We would like to invite police officers to speak, and will have local artists performing spoken word poetry and songs that both criticize the problems people of color face and celebrate the resilience they have displayed. We would also address other problems people of color encounter such as housing discrimination and unequal education.

Our goal is to provide an outlet for those who feel frustrated with how black Americans are treated across the nation by police while engaging New Rochelle police in our effort to promote equality. We hope this will be an opportunity for the entire city of New Rochelle to come together for the purpose of improving the lives of every member of our community.

We are incredibly excited to kick off such a crucial event, but we need your help. Spread the word and contact everyone and anyone you know who would be interested by telling them personally or by forwarding this email.
