Bail reform has already spared thousands – likely tens of thousands – of New Yorkers from pretrial jailing. Yet after less than six weeks, the New York Senate is proposing a rollback that would dismantle our hard-won reform. This proposal would be a devastating step backward from even the old bail law and would dramatically increase the number of people jailed before trial.
The risk of bail reform rollbacks is highest in the state budget – which passes on April 1st. With just over four weeks until then, we are in a critical moment to fight back against the racist, pro-jail forces lining up behind regressive changes to the new bail reform law.
Please join us Fridays at 2pm to hear updates, discuss strategy, and finds ways to plug into the current fight against bail rollbacks. These weekly calls are hosted by VOCAL-NY, the Legal Aid Society, and Center for Community Alternatives and include organizers and advocates across the state.
