October 8
Gonzalo Cruz
Gonzalo Cruz is a Mexican immigrant and professional community organizer who has been Director of Don Bosco Workers, Inc. in Port Chester for three years. In 2006 an attempt began, to move day laborers from street corners to a hiring site in the town. Since its founding, the organization has hosted close to 800 workers. The site matches worker skill to employer need, negotiates wage contracts and provides wage recovery services and advocacy for victims of wage fraud. The organization has become a formidable voice in advocacy for workers’ rights and ending exploitation of Latino immigrant workers. Don Bosco Workers is presently involved in a related issue with Westchester United: advocating for guaranteed access to kindergarten for all Port Chester children.
