Invitation: Join our #FreeThemAll caravan on May 27th
Important message from Jennifer Hernandez, Lead Organizer with Make the Road New York:
Dear WESPAC Partners,
The COVID-19 pandemic is hitting immigrant, Black, and Brown communities hard, especially in prisons and jails because social distancing is impossible inside. As a result, per the marshall project, over 25,000 people in prison had tested positive for the illness. Over 370 people in prison have died of COVID-related causes.
Our nation’s prisons and jails are so overpopulated, that it is nearly impossible to establish a 6 foot separation rule. This virus is deadly, and unless our State does more to depopulate mass incarceration facilities, our loved ones will die in custody.
On Wednesday May 27th, join us for a #FreeThemAll caravan led by Immigrant, Black, and Brown NYers stopping at Sing Sing Correctional Facility in Ossining, NY to demand Governor Cuomo decarcerate jails and prisons and end criminalization. This includes:
- Granting clemency to all people over 50, all immunocompromised people, pregnant people, trans and non-binary people, youth, and survivors of gendered violence.
- Releasing all people serving determinate sentences who are one year or less from release.
- Freeing all those in immigrant detention, including in Batavia and any immigrants being held at the Queens Detention Facility.
- Prohibiting the use of electronic monitoring, home confinement, and rescinding all civil and criminal fines related to social distancing.
New York State has already seen over 443 cases and 16 deaths among people in prison from COVID-19. One of the first deaths took place at Sing Sing where we will take our #FreeThemAll caravan. We ask that you join us! Sing Sing holds over 1,700 prisoners, all of whom are extremely worried that COVID will continue to spread.
