Discovering the True Story of Philipsburg Manor
For decades, visitors to this historic site were presented with a charming—and sanitized—image of colonial life. But some twenty years ago, those charged with preserving the legacy of Philipsburg Manor realized it was finally time to embrace the whole truth: that the farm was a “provisioning plantation” where slavery was practiced—and profited from—well into the eighteenth century.
Join us for a special meeting of REPAIR (Rivertowns Episcopal Parishes Action on Inclusion and Race) when our guests, Waddell Stillman and Lynda Jones of Historic Hudson Valley, will explain how Philipsburg Manor became the first historical site dedicated to telling the story of slavery in the colonial North. They’ll describe the challenges involved in leading a beloved institution, and an entire community, on a sometimes painful, yet ultimately rewarding, journey of honest self-examination.
