Indonesian Rights Activist

Next week, prominent Indonesian human rights activist, Usman Hamid, will be giving two talks in New York City. Usman, served as director of the human rights organization KontraS (the Commission for “the Disappeared” and Victims of Violence) and a co-founder of Change.org Indonesia.

Usman will explore the impact of social media on freedom of expression in Indonesia with particular attention to whether the emergence of new social media has increased or undermined those freedoms.

During this talk he will address will discuss Indonesia president Jokowi’s policies and challenges on human rights, and the prospects for justice for the masterminds of the September 7, 2014 murder of human rights defender Munir Said Thalib’s murder. Usman will also share highlights of his recent research on freedom of expression and internet freedom in Indonesia. Indonesia is one of the world’s top users of social media and it is becoming the country’s newest front in the struggle for human rights. Joining Usman will be Matt Easton, a writer and independent consultant carrying out research and advocacy focusing on the protection of human rights defenders and on human rights in Southeast Asia
