The New Jim Crow

February 24, 2014 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Community Discussions On

 “The New Jim Crow”

On Monday, February 24, at 6 p.m., WESPAC in partnership with the Antiracist Alliance will kick off a Westchester Community Read and Discussion on the book “The New Jim Crow” by Michelle Alexander.  All are  invited to the kickoff at the Mapleton Conference Center at Good Counsel located at  52 North Broadway in White Plains, NY 10603.  Darlene DiDomenick will lead the presentation.

During the month of March, several facilitators including Lutonya Russell-Humes, Ceil Lavan, Felice Gelman, George Guerci, Bart Worden, Lena Anderson and others will lead these weekly book discussion groups in New Rochelle, Ossining, Mt Vernon, White Plains and Mt Kisco.  You are welcome and encouraged to sign up for one that is convenient to you.  The full schedule will be posted soon to www.wespac.org

Discussions are free and open to the public. We welcome all who would like to engage in this important conversation about racism and mass incarceration.

“The New Jim Crow,” written by law professor and legal writer Michelle Alexander, is a compelling case for how the racism of slavery and the original Jim Crow Laws have not left our nation but have found their way into the foundations of our criminal justice system. By detailing the history of Jim Crow, the War on Drugs and our current system of Mass Incarceration, Alexander gives her readers an opportunity to step into the truth of the structural racism at play in the United States today.

The public is welcome to attend. Reading the book is not a prerequisite to join the conversation.   For more details, please call Sandy at 914.522.5997.
