Call until Friday, 6/9 to help pass the Packaging Reduction & Recycling Infrastructure Act to cut plastic pollution in NYS!
Please pick up the phone right now to ask NYS Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie to schedule a vote on the Packaging Reduction & Recycling Infrastructure Act before the legislature adjourns this Friday, June 9. Doesn’t matter if you’ve called before, call every day.
We have a whole crew of grassroots activists in the Capitol Building at the New York State Capital today pulling members off the floor. And we need you to back us up by working the phones!
With so many bills vying for the attention of legislative leaders, hearing from you is what will convince our legislative leaders to prioritize passing the packaging reduction bill this week.
Call now. Click here for the phone number and quick talking points.
I know we can do this with your help, Nada.
It’s also helpful to have environmental advocates like our friend, Mark Ruffalo, joining the chorus of New Yorkers urging our leaders to act. Watch this short video Mark recorded this weekend below and please share it widely to help spread the word.
Right now, you and the rest of NY’s taxpayers are footing the bill to deal with all the polluting waste that needless single-use plastic packaging creates.
The Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act (A5322-a/S4246-a) would require companies to cut their single-use plastic packaging by 50% over 12 years (a gradual process that will not punish businesses) and redesign what’s left to make it recyclable, as well as to remove 18 of the most toxic chemicals from their packaging. That list of chemicals includes PFAS, benzene, toluene, phthalates, bisphenols, formaldehyde, lead, cadmium, and other heavy metals that are commonly used in packaging now, including food packaging.
And when their packaging is discarded, the companies would be required to pay to collect, sort, and manage what’s left, providing much-needed taxpayer relief and funding for our recycling programs and infrastructure.
Time is running out!
Please call now to urge our legislative leaders to pass both of these bills before the session ends and the legislators head home to their districts this Friday, June 9th.
