New York is currently facing a waste crisis. On average, residents across the state generate about five pounds of trash per day, totaling about 15 million tons of waste statewide annually.
We need to address this crisis and would like NYS to pass an extended producer responsibility (EPR) program. EPR makes manufacturers of packaging financially responsible for the waste they produce and takes the recycling cost burden off local municipalities. It also incentivizes manufacturers to become more sustainable and reduce the amount of packaging waste they’re generating. Ultimately, EPR will dramatically reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfills and contributing to climate change.
Right now, New York has the opportunity to pass an EPR program in the NYS budget, which is due on April 1st. Would you consider supporting this important bill?
