Stand Up and Speak Out. Demand Congress Stop Trump’s Illegal War Now.
The Trump administration carried out military strikes on Venezuela targeting the capital city of Caracas directly. Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife were abducted by US armed forces to stand trial on drug and weapons charges in New York.
Trump has announced that his administration will “run the country” and that “we are going to run the country right.″ He also said that the oil industry would “spend millions” and “make a lot of money” taking over Venezuela’s oil, the world’s largest reserves estimated at 17% of the total available globally.
Make no mistake, this is illegal.
And as Rep. Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee said this morning, “there’s no evidence whatsoever this makes America safer.“
Now it’s going to take all of us working together to stop Trump’s illegal war.
Congress must act. World leaders must stand up. American corporations must not provide support. And you and I need to speak up immediately, loudly, and with the clear message to reverse course now.
Starting with Congress, Senators and Representatives must take four critical steps immediately:
- Condemn the attacks
- Demand the return of Venezuela’s President and First Lady to their country
- Block federal funds for military operations not directly dedicated to immediate withdrawal of forces
- Outlaw American companies from assisting or profiting from Trump’s illegal war
Congress should look to existing legislation like the bipartisan No Unauthorized Force in Venezuela Act, led by Senators Jeff Merkley and Representative Seth Moulton, and recent War Power Resolutions led by Senator Tim Kaine for guidance.
Let’s be clear: Legislation alone won’t end this.
Trump will use the power of the bully pulpit in an attempt to control the narrative. Every person must stand up and speak out against this attack on a sovereign nation or the warmongers will fill the void, drown out the opposition and expand the targets.
Trump already said on Fox & Friends that action could be expanded to Mexico and Columbia. “Something’s going to have to be done with Mexico,” Trump said. He went on to specifically say that Colombian President Gustavo Petro needs to “watch his ass.” During a White House press conference, Secretary of State Marco Rubio added Cuba, saying people who live in Havana should be “concerned.”
This is all hands on deck moment. We can stop Trump’s illegal war, but not without taking action every day.
