Hello Everyone,
A message from Dr. Ricardo Alvarez,
Mumia Abu-Jamal is an author, journalist, thought leader, and movement elder who has been incarcerated in the Pennsylvania system since 1981. His case has been recognized the world over as emblematic of the racist collusion of courts, police, and prosecution in the U.S. criminal punishment system. On March 16, 2023, Judge Lucretia Clemons will make a decision on Mumia’s last legal road to freedom.
I write to you as Mumia’s physician consultant, defending the physical integrity of Mumia’s body while he lives in a state of unjust and violent captivity. The Mumia Health Committee has written an open letter to Judge Clemons, calling on her to free Mumia on March 16, and I am asking you to sign your name on the letter and add your voice to the growing coalition organizing to bring Mumia home.

Mumia teaches a message of “Love Not Phear” (Phear = Philadelphia + Fear) and invites us to find compassion in the face of cruel systems designed to dehumanize us. In this love letter to Judge Clemons, we ask her to make a decision that will help liberate Mumia from decades of violent judicial oppression. Our previous advocacy led to Judge Clemons’ decision to delay her formerly stated “intent to dismiss” on December 16, 2022. We are now reaching out across diverse professional disciplines—including medical, legal, social work, theological, and other spaces—to unite in this powerful historical moment. Please join our growing movement of abolitionist professionals who are building on the work of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people to free our incarcerated elders—the first step in a larger movement to free ourselves and our communities.
Please consider signing on to our letter.
Love Not Phear,
Ricardo Alvarez, MD
Member, Mumia Health Committee
