Joycelyn Leona Satchell died peacefully from breast cancer on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at Calvary Hospital in Bronx , New York at the age of 57. She resided with her partner Nadine Lugo in Cortlandt Manor, New York.
The eldest daughter of the late Lt. Colonel James Leon Satchell and the late Virginia Carter Satchell. She was born on June 22, 1953 in Schuylkill Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Warwick High School in Lititz, Pennsylvania in 1971. In 1994, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Pennsylvania State University with a major in Public Policy.
She leaves behind a loving sister, Felicia L. Satchell; her partner, Nadine Lugo; a nephew, Jalal Sabur; an aunt, Gladys Nixon; an uncle, Stanley Moore and many loving cousins, close friends, and co-workers.
As an “army brat” she lived in Germany, France, Virginia, California, and Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She worked at Ross Engineering and at Domestic Violence Services of Lancaster County, PA as a counselor. In 1996 she relocated to White Plains, New York where she worked as a Caseworker at Westhab, a Senior Caseworker for the Westchester County Department of Social Services and most recently as a Health Investigator for the Westchester County Department of Health.
As an AIDS/HIV, Women’s and LGBT activist, she dedicated her life to educate our community about health and wellness, women’s rights, and gender issues.
She was an accomplished flute player and an avid collector of jazz music. She had an infectious laugh, great sense of humor, extremely passionate, strong, generous and treated everyone like family. She will be missed.
