We are happy to share this op-ed published yesterday by our friend Betty Lyons (Onondaga Nation), who is the President & Executive Director of the American Indian Law Alliance. We know that yesterday, and everyday, is #IndigenousPeoplesDay.
Betty says: "We know that supposed discovery of the so-called New World has had its greatest negative impact on the tens of millions of indigenous peoples who lived here. For those of us who are their descendants, we survived, now thrive and will not back down. We will continue to assert our inherent right to self-determination and sovereignty among all other nations of the world.
We are very pleased to be sending a member of our local WCPR coalition, Kathy Kaufman, to represent us at the annual NACOLE conference, a leader in the professional civilian oversight of local law enforcement. There are many important presentations that she will attend and report back to the Westchester County Community later in October. Topics ranging from: less lethal policies and tactics, implicit bias, police unions, assessing institutional culture, public access to police records, trans-nationalizing civilian oversight, achieving data driven correctional oversight (we talk about data driven results in the monthly results based accountability group), anatomy of police community relations hashtag#metoo and law enforcement, law enforcement and the homeless. www.nacole.org/2018_annual_nacole_conference...
