Communications Director

The Center for Social Inclusion (“CSI”) is a fast-paced, nimble national policy organization that works to build opportunity for everyone by dismantling structural racism. We partner with communities of color and other allies to create strategies and build policy reform models to end racial disparity and promote equal opportunity. Using a systems analysis with a race lens, we collaboratively develop and move transformational policies and the relationships and tools to support victory. We seek a creative and forward-thinking communications strategist to work with us in developing an integrated approach to advocacy, public engagement and communications. The CSI Communications Director is charged with ensuring that external communications meet dual objectives of strengthening our reputation and visibility, on the one hand, and achieving substantive programmatic objectives, on the other. The ideal candidate has a wide range of contemporary communications experience and skills, including drafting, editing and overseeing design and production of publications, from substantive reports to collateral materials; applying new media tools and strategies; press relations; and framing and messaging. Working closely with the Executive Director and a talented staff, the Communications Director plans, implements and oversees CSI’s external communications strategy.  Exceptional writing and editing skills are a must.  A keen intellect and the ability to grasp and translate big ideas into everyday language; experience in new/social media communications; and, strong leadership and interpersonal skills are essential.

Duties & Responsibilities

Craft long term and annual strategic communications plans and goals in consultation with the Executive Director.
Work with staff on drafting, editing, design, production, dissemination and promotion of accessible and innovative programmatic reports for the general public and opinion makers.
Develop and manage how CSI applies new/social media tools and strategies to support advocacy and communications goals, including maintaining: meaningful relationships with online communities (e.g. social media sites, blogs, online reporters and producers); and a vibrant and interactive CSI webpage.
Work closely with program staff on framing and message development to further policy and advocacy goals.
Manage journalist outreach and media placement with consultant support.
Develop and oversee production of collateral materials, including annual reports, brochures and newsletters.
Manage CSI’s ongoing branding.
Support fundraising and development goals.
Participate on the Management Team.

Requirements:

Five or more years of experience in nonprofit external communications with demonstrated success in promoting organizations and supporting issue advocacy.
Proficiency with both legacy and new media tools and strategies (the Internet, online communities, blogs, webcasts, podcasts, twitter, video production, wikis, etc.).
Deep understanding of role new/social media plays in communications and advocacy, both the rewards and risks.
Understanding of and proficiency in framing and messaging analysis and tools.
Excellent written and oral communications skills.
Ability to transfer effective communications skills to non-communication colleagues.
Strong planning and project management skills, with the ability to juggle many projects and set priorities.
