Sharonne Salaam is again organizing a march from Harlem to Albany to demand compensation for those who have been wrongfully incarcerated in New York State (Senate Bill #S02074A / Assembly Bill #A03978A and
Right To Counsel: Senate Bill #4980A / Assembly Bill #6982). She called me and asked Westchester folk to help host her group as they pass through Westchester County on May 11th and 12th this year (hosting the group overnight/hosting for a meal/joining part of the march etc). Is your group or congregation willing to take on one piece of this? All details below. Her core group will between around 10 to 20 people that will need meals and accommodation.

Justice 4 The Wrongfully Incarcerated is a volunteer organization that works to improve outcomes for incarcerated people, especially the wrongfully incarcerated. We do this by working with legislators and family members to create laws that help this population live more productive lives upon their release, by visiting those who are still behind bars, and by supporting their families.
Every year, wrongfully convicted men, women, and children are found not guilty and are set free through the courts. Many leave prison with no more than the clothes on their backs and enough cash for the bus or train ride home and a meal. Some newly exonerated people have spent 1, 5, 20, 30, or more years in prison, and on some, the toll of incarceration leaves scars similar to post-traumatic stress disorder. The many difficulties they face in trying to get their lives back lead some to suicidal thoughts; some actually commit suicide. Overwhelmed by the impact of their prison background and an unforgiving society, many feel they have no choice but to enter the world of crime – a world that had been foreign to them before they were wrongly accused and convicted.
Right now, Justice 4 The Wrongfully Incarcerated has two bills in the New York State Legislature: S.02074A, sponsored by Senator Brian Benjamin, and A.03978A, sponsored by Assemblyman Jeffrion Aubry. These bills offer financial compensation, education, and other services to those who were wrongfully convicted of crimes they didn’t commit, helping to make them whole.
Justice 4 The Wrongfully Incarcerated wants you to join the CALL THE LEGISLATORS ON MONDAY campaign… call the legislators listed below. Please call them whenever you can and as often as you can until May 19, 2020, and tell them to pass these bills.

On May 10, 2020, Justice 4 The Wrongfully Incarcerated and others will begin a 10-day walk to Albany seeking justice. As we walk, we will educate people along the way about this campaign for justice. The WALK 4 JUSTICE campaign will push to move S.02074A and A.03978A forward. On the final day – May 19, 2020 – our group will rally in Albany and meet with members of the New York State legislature to speak with them about the importance of passing these bills.
