Earth Grooves Concert Special

April 25, 2015 @ 7:00 pm

Clearwater Celebrates in Yonkers with “Earth Grooves” Concert April 25

YONKERS, NY–Hudson River Sloop Clearwater will hold a unique concert showcasing the music and dance of indigenous people at the historic St. John’s Episcopal Church here in celebration of Earth Day, and also the organization’s growing partnership with the Yonkers waterfront. “Earth Grooves” will take place Saturday, April 25, at 7:00 PM in the 600-seat sanctuary of the church at 1 Hudson Street.

West African legend Abdoulaye Diabate will headline the event, with featured performances by the crowd-pleasing Thunderbird American Indian Dancers and the Agua Clara Andean Ensemble, known to many for their concert-quality performances in New York City’s subways and street-corner events. Hosting will be the composer and multi-instrumentalist David Amram.

More information is available through Clearwater, at http://www.clearwater.org/earthgrooves/. For tickets, go to http://hudsonriversloopclearwater.brownpapertickets.com/. Adults, $35. Students, $15; children, FREE. V.I.P tickets (including wine-and-cheese reception) and guaranteed front-rows seating, $100.

The sloop Clearwater, the iconic 106-foot 18th-century replica sloop that has carried more than 12,000 schoolchildren and adults up and down the river over the past 45 years, will be docked in Yonkers all afternoon the day of the concert.

Combining the power of music with protection of the environment – the theme of the Earth Grooves concert – has been a hallmark of Clearwater from the time it was founded by folksinger and environmental activist Pete Seeger.

“Clearwater has been protecting, preserving and promoting the health of the Hudson River and its watershed for more than 45 years,” said Peter Gross, executive director of the organization.  “While the achievements have been substantial, the health of our waters continues to be threatened by any erosion of protections – and by the prospect of heavy development activity in critical ecologically sensitive areas.”  All proceeds from the concert will go to benefit Clearwater.
