Farm Law 101

Join us for Farm Law 101, an introduction to key legal topics for farmers and those interested in starting a farm business. Legal issues affect almost every aspect of establishing and growing a successful and resilient farm business – from leasing or buying land, forming a business entity, hiring workers, creating sales relationships, to getting insurance, and more. This program is a user-friendly primer designed to help both established and aspiring farmers identify key legal issues and know when to seek legal advice. Attorneys from Pace University, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and Shearman & Sterling LLP will address topics including:

  • LLCs and other business structures
  • Farm labor law
  • Leases and other real estate matters
  • Insurance and risk management

Speakers:

Jonathan Brown is the Director of the Food and Beverage Law Clinic at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University. With faculty supervision, law students in the Food and Beverage Law Clinic provide pro bono legal representation to small farms, food and beverage entrepreneurs, and nonprofit organizations. Jonathan also serves on the board of NOFA-NY.

Jennifer Grossman has more than 20 years of strategic environmental legal work in both the public and not-for-profit sectors. She is the Founder/President of FarmCo New York, a Catskill-based company creating economically-viable and environmentally-conscious family farm business ventures. She was previously the Vice President for Land Acquisition of the Open Space Institute for 11 years. She currently works with NRDC to forge collaborative platforms between rural and urban communities and encourage economic growth via sustainable local agriculture.

David Goldstein is an Associate at the firm of Shearman & Sterling LLP. He focuses his practice on estate planning, tax matters and the administration of estates and trusts. He is a former member of the New York City Bar’s Committee on Estate and Gift Taxation, and has been recognized by Super Lawyers as a New York Metro Rising Star in the areas of Estate Planning & Probate from 2015-2020.
