Community to Rally for Debt Forgiveness for Puerto Rico

Community to Rally for Debt Forgiveness for Puerto Rico

 Saturday, October 21st – Noon – Hastings-on-Hudson

The VFW Plaza – Warburton Ave. & Spring St.

In the face of Puerto Rico’s massive hurricane damage and its concurrent economic crisis, members of Concerned Families of Westchester will rally on Saturday, October 21st for “Debt Forgiveness for Puerto Rico.” We will take our request, in a letter, to the home of one of the major holders of Puerto Rico’s debt.

We will begin with a brief rally at the VFW Plaza in Hastings-on-Hudson at 12 noon.  We will then walk 1/3 of a mile to 663 Broadway, the home of David E. Shaw, whose hedge fund is one of the leading holders of Puerto Rico’s debt.  We will deliver a letter to Mr. Shaw asking that his company forgive the debt it holds, and that he encourage other holders of Puerto Rico’s debt to do the same. Concerned Families of Westchester hopes that he will honor the request of his new neighbors, and do his part to help relieve the misery of our Puerto Rican fellow citizens.

Debt forgiveness for Puerto Rico is being debated now in Congress, and the role of the holders of the debt is one of the important issues under discussion.  A useful article about the debate, “Political Support Growing to Wipe Out Puerto Rico’s Wall Street Debt,” can be read here. As for Mr. Shaw’s new home, the destination of our march, it recently won an award for its landscaping, and pictures of the prize-winning layout can be seen here.

Concerned Families of Westchester was founded the day after 9/11/2001.  We are a peace and justice organization.  Most of our members live in Yonkers, Hastings, and Dobbs Ferry.
