Boats Sailing to Gaza “At Any Price”
Since 2005, Israel has blockaded the Gaza Strip, home to 1.5 million Palestinians. Basic goods are not
allowed in, and those goods permitted are subject to long and unpredictable delays. The blockade has
dramatically increased malnutrition and economically devastated Gaza, producing a man-made
humanitarian disaster. It has prevented any rebuilding since Israel?s 2009 attack on Gaza that left 1,400
dead and many thousands more wounded and homeless.
This week, eight sea vessels carrying thousands of tons of medical equipment, construction material,
and humanitarian aid with over 600 civilian passengers set sail to break Israel?s illegal siege. Previous
attempts to sail to Gaza have been stopped by the Israeli navy, which has fired on and rammed civilian
boats and seized American and international citizens on open waters, an act of piracy.
