Rabbi Ascherman to speak at Temple Israel

Rabbi Ascherman will tell his own story of being attacked by a Jewish settler while protecting the Palestinian olive harvest from vandalism and theft.  His is part of the broader and brave story of Rabbis for Human Rights and their ongoing work educating young Israelis about human rights and Judaism; pursuing socio-economic justice for Israelis; advocating on behalf of the Bedouin in the Negev; defending the rights of Palestinians in the Occupied Territories.

In a time in which a nationalist and isolationist understanding of Jewish tradition is heard frequently and loudly, Rabbis for Human Rights give expression to the traditional Jewish responsibility for the safety and welfare of the stranger, the different and the weak, the convert, the widow and the orphan.
