On Wednesday, May 6th, 2015 at 6:30 PM the Diversity and Activism Programming Subcommittee (DAPS) at Sarah Lawrence College will host a free screening of Divided Families, a documentary film that explores the Korean American experience of more than 60 years of woeful separation from North Korean family members.
Thousands of family members were divided when the border was drawn between North and South Korea, and even more were dislocated during the chaos of the Korean War. In search of peace and hope, many Koreans immigrated to the United States.
Time is running out for the 100,000 first generation Korean Americans with immediate family members in the North Korea. They are in their 70s, 80s, and 90s. The U.S. has no political relationship with North Korea, and therefore no formal mechanisms exists for family members to identify or communicate with their families in North Korea. These divided family members have suffered with no access to the people they love most.
This film has been screened at various locations in the U.S., including the U.S. Congress, Harvard University, and Korea Society in NYC; as well as the Asian Institute for Policy Studies in Seoul.
With each screening, the Divided Families USA team hopes to bring resolution H.Con.Res.91 (House Concurrent Resolution 91) into effect, which will potentially open opportunities for separated family members to be reunited.
